“Is it this question again? After hearing the princess’s words, the lethargic youth pondered for a moment without immediately tossing the dice. Instead, he suggested:
“Princess Veronica, while the results of my dice rolls only represent the present, in questions spanning long periods, conditions and outcomes often change, but they don’t always.
It’s been just a few months since you last asked this question. Asking now, the result should not differ much from last time. You’d best consider changing to a new question.”
“No, I’ll stick with this one.”
The princess shook her head calmly: “This is the responsibility I was born with, and my sole hope at the moment. If I don’t ask this, what else could I possibly ask?”
“Since you insist, well then.”
Shrugging helplessly, the lethargic youth loosened his right hand, letting two dice tumble onto the desk. With a couple of bounces, they landed showing two fresh red ones.
“Because of the Lane family matter, your probability of saving the kingdom has indeed increased by two points compared to last time, reaching eleven percent.”
As he spoke, he lightly tapped the desk with his knuckles, causing the dice to jump and continue rolling.
“Next, taking control of the military department, cooperating with the Minister of Defense, and seizing the vacant shares of the Lane family will raise the probability by another two points.
Then, aligning with the Prime Minister to intervene in the Upper House to suppress old nobility; followed by uniting with the old nobility to pressure the Lower House, passing bills to restrict certain commercial activities and increase taxes. Once all that is done, the probability will rise to twenty-six points;
After that, find a way to become the queen and, through purging traitors and resisting the next invasion, take the opportunity to reclaim military power, finances, legislation, personnel rights, etc., promoting a batch of officials who share your vision. At this point, the probability will skyrocket to fifty-one points…”
Indeed, quite similar to last time.
Listening to the gradually increasing probabilities and these tasks she had already planned to undertake, the princess couldn’t help but smile slightly, then shook her head again.
Indeed, if she accomplished all this, she would have the capability to save the nation, but these tasks were far from as simple as ordering a carriage full of fruit or secretly removing a wheel.
Each item proposed by the other party required countless sleepless nights of painstaking effort and difficult negotiations measured in years. Her road ahead was still long…
“Rattle rattle!”
Just as the princess leaned in to listen carefully, for some unknown reason, after reaching “fifty-one,” the dice on the table didn’t proceed to “sixty-six” but suddenly began spinning rapidly.
Under the astonished gaze of the lethargic youth, the two dice spun faster and faster until they actually scorched the solid wood desk, filling the entire room with a pungent smell of burnt焦糊.
What’s going on?! Although anomalous items are basically impossible to destroy like this, the lethargic youth instinctively reached out to grab them, attempting to forcibly stop the two dice. However, as soon as his hand touched them, the high-speed rotation of the bone dice sliced open his palm.
When he hastily pulled back due to pain, the two bloodied dice collided a few times and finally came to a slow stop, their sharp edges pointing towards the ceiling, lying quietly in the small pit ground into the desk.
“…”
Seeing the stunned lethargic youth staring at the dice, the princess couldn’t help but feel a pang of worry and quickly asked:
“Why are both sides showing ‘zero’? What does this mean?”
“It means…the attempt wasn’t fully successful.”
Looking at the dice stained with his own blood and the circle of bloodstains on the desk, the lethargic youth clutched his still bleeding right hand and frowned deeply:
“The question you asked involves someone with a Leon Value above sixty points… meaning, an entity on the level of a True God. He detected our probing and blocked this investigation.”
“Could it be…a True God will descend upon the kingdom in the future?”
“Probably not.”
Upon hearing this, the lethargic youth shook his head, his expression somewhat hesitant: “An existence on the level of a True God doesn’t necessarily have to be a True God. While I couldn’t see the figure clearly, judging by its size, it seemed human, except it had multiple wings behind it. And…”
And somehow it felt oddly familiar…
Recalling the brief vision he had seen, he firmly memorized the back view of that black-haired, black-eyed, slightly slim-bodied ‘True God’ with multi-colored feathered wings before reassuring her:
“And this person isn’t necessarily targeting the kingdom. If they truly are a True God, you might end up conflicting with their more focused believers in the future, or perhaps collaborate with them, or even just coincidentally meet several times—these situations all have a chance of being detected and interrupted by them.
But with us at the Clearing Bureau, there definitely won’t be any major issues. Numerous True Gods have attempted to descend in the past, but they’ve all been driven away. No True God can remain in this world for long, so you don’t need to overly worry.”
But it’s a True God! How could I not worry? After hearing the lethargic youth’s words, the princess couldn’t help but take a deep breath and then asked:
“So, can you try rolling again? To confirm the situation.”
“Sorry, that’s really not possible…”
Lifting his still bleeding palm and waving it at the princess, the lethargic youth helplessly explained: “That entity seems rather gentle in character. Upon discovering my probing, they didn’t get angry, merely issuing a minor punishment.
But if I stubbornly force another probe into the future, while it’s unlikely I’d be eliminated, I’d probably end up bedridden for months at the very least.”
“Alright, you’ve worked hard.”
Disappointed, the princess sighed and silently took out her checkbook. Not only did she pay the agreed fee, but she also added a substantial bonus. Still uneasy, she instructed:
“When some time has passed, if that True God isn’t watching you anymore…”
“I’ll immediately follow up with the results and notify you of any abnormalities.”
After making the promise to this “regular customer,” the travel-weary lethargic youth took out a bandage, wrapped his injured right hand, and decisively bid farewell. He retrieved his luggage and hurried towards the Clearing Bureau.
Although his bureau director was relatively easygoing, the General Bureau had strict management regulations regarding his extremely valuable and easily game-changing ability.
Especially concerning whereabouts—wherever he went and whoever he met had to be reported in detail. Thus, he could only sneak out to earn extra income during the gaps before and after missions.
To help his new colleague ascend to the position of Duke, he had already delayed nearly two days. If he didn’t return soon to settle his task, he might end up getting inspected by the General Bureau alongside his new colleague.
Pushing open the heavy door and entering the Clearing Bureau, dragging his suitcase through the dim corridor, he noticed the corridor’s end bathed in sunlight, and the Director’s office door appeared wide open. The lethargic youth hesitated briefly, then instead of heading directly to his own office, he took out the already prepared task report and walked toward the Director’s office.
“Director, I’ve completed the investigation… ah… sorry.”
Just as he was about to speak, noticing there was someone else in the office, the lethargic youth politely apologized and instinctively glanced at the colleague inside.
A young man with black hair, black eyes, and a slightly slender build turned his head curiously, looking over at him…
