“Um, this illness… I think I can actually cure it?”
Aino, who had just finished eating and was about to rest, was interrupted by an excited Carter. In the short time they had known each other, this was the first time Aino had seen him so thrilled.
Carter brought Aino to the bedside and gently tucked in the corner of the quilt.
“We’ve consulted many doctors, and they all say it’s an incurable strange disease. You’re knowledgeable, perhaps you have a way.”
“I’ll take a look…”
The petite magical creature girl was still in a daze when Carter brought her into the bedroom, and then she found herself face to face with a human woman who was equally astonished.
But just with this one look, or perhaps just by slightly sensing the woman’s aura, Aino knew that something was indeed wrong with her.
The meridians, veins, and magical energy in her body were entangled, causing her entire body to continuously lose its energy supply.
This was due to the dragon race’s innate sensitivity to magical energy, as well as that all-seeing dragon eye, which allowed Aino to easily discern the essence of the strange disease. If it were a human, they truly wouldn’t know how to even detect the problem, let alone treat it.
“Probably just need to clear the meridians and sort out the magical energy,” Aino thought to herself.
After careful consideration, Aino slowly said, “I feel that curing it should be no problem.”
Carter, who was beside her, was overjoyed, and Molly also had an incredulous look on her face.
She only felt that tonight’s events were too abrupt: her husband returned home, inexplicably brought a “guest,” and then inexplicably led this guest into the bedroom. Moreover, this guest was a young-looking girl. This girl claimed she could cure her illness, and her husband seemed delighted, as if he had no doubts about it at all.
Has Carter been so desperate that he’s fallen for some con artist’s trick?
“Carter, I mean… this young lady…”
“Please save Molly. If you can cure her, I will repay you with everything I have!”
“…”
Molly thought her husband must have gone mad!
Actually, Carter was also very uneasy inside.
After all, he had only met Aino briefly some time ago and had only spent a few hours with her tonight, and moreover, she was a powerful and dangerous magical creature.
Why did he trust her so readily? Since when had his trust become so easily given?
He felt that Miss Aino had an inexplicable way of making people relax their vigilance.
Mainly, given his and Molly’s current predicament, there was no other option but to trust her.
Though he had been holding on, Carter was well aware of what the end would be if things continued this way.
He just didn’t want to face it.
Carter felt that meeting a friendly and powerful magical creature like Aino at this time was simply a gift from heaven, his only chance!
“No need to rush. To treat this illness, the madam needs to be in a slightly better physical and mental state. It’s already late tonight; let her have a good rest, and I’ll treat her tomorrow.”
Carter didn’t say anything more; he just earnestly clasped his hands and bowed to Aino, then led her back to the living room.
“What’s her background?” Molly couldn’t help but ask.
Back in the room, Carter took off his coat and replied, “She’s a friendly magical creature.”
Facing his wife’s astonished look, Carter solemnly gestured with his hand.
“Trust me first, Molly. When I encountered her in the forest before, she didn’t attack me; on the contrary, she gave me a Dragon’s Blood Flower.”
“Don’t be afraid. The thing is, we have no other options; I will definitely…”
Before Carter could finish, Molly interrupted him with a smile.
“I was just a little surprised. I trust you, and I also trust her. She seems like a trustworthy girl.”
Carter couldn’t help but laugh and said, “Child… she might be many times older than the two of us put together, haha.”
“Indeed, the lifespans of other races are vastly different from humans. Our lives might seem very brief to them.”
…
“Hey Carter, even the top doctors said your wife was incurable. How did you manage to cure her?”
The burly middle-aged man before him was Jess, a long-time friend of Carter’s and the owner of this tavern.
“I can only say I got lucky and came across an opportunity,” Carter smiled and replied offhandedly.
Just seven or eight days after bringing Aino home, Molly had already recovered from her illness.
To be precise, after just two days, Aino announced that the treatment was finished. The subsequent days were merely for restoring Molly’s strength and having her engage in some physical activities inside or around the house.
Two days ago, he took Aino to the forest once more, and their haul was several times greater than before.
Because for Aino, venturing into this forest was as easy as an adult dealing with a child; she resolved everything without breaking a sweat.
Not just her strength, but also her keen perception and skillful use of her abilities deeply impressed Carter.
It felt as though, even without experience, she could overcome anything with her raw power alone.
By contrast, his contributions were limited to storing spiritual herbs, navigating and planning paths to various locations, and leveraging the knowledge and experience he had gained over time.
Unexpectedly, after half a lifetime of hard work, he found himself under the wing of someone powerful… Aino is quite the homebody, now residing in Carter’s home and seldom venturing outside.
Carter reminded Jess, “For tomorrow night, please make sure the feast I ordered is excellent. We’ll be at this table. It’s a rare occasion for my wife to go out.”
“Moreover, there’s a guest coming. Please be courteous and don’t make me lose face!”
Recently, Molly’s health had fully returned to normal, so Carter decided to bring her and Aino to Jess’s tavern for a meal to celebrate a little.
He had checked with Aino earlier; although she had a particular fondness for raw meat, she could also consume human cuisine, so it was fine.
“Don’t worry, I still remember what your wife likes. The drinks for your table will be on the house, help yourself!”
With the elimination of the hefty expenses for Molly’s treatment, Carter no longer had to venture into the forest daily to sell goods. Reflecting on that time, he wondered how he had managed to endure; he had been constantly putting his life on the line.
With some leisure time now, he would occasionally come to Jess’s tavern to sit for a while, have a couple of drinks, and chat with Jess. Such days were truly wonderful.
Regrettably, not everyone could appreciate tranquil days. Carter was aware that wars were still raging in some regions, and people in certain areas were still plagued by famine and beastly calamities. Even this city of Danting was not entirely peaceful.
Despite the oppression from numerous other races, humans were still embroiled in internal conflicts. If they directed this energy towards combating ogres and the pig-headed tribe, those creatures certainly wouldn’t be so audacious.
Earlier, Jess had grumbled to Carter about the recent troubles with hoodlums frequently causing disturbances and brawls in the tavern, which not only damaged the premises but also drove away patrons, making business harder by the day.
Sigh, no wonder they say that life is suffering for all. Thankfully, he still possessed some capabilities, and he hoped to lead a good life.
